  • READ BEFORE YOU BEGIN

    • Before proposing a new course, it is suggested that the course be first taught as an experimental (course number x67) course. Developing and teaching an experimental course only requires the approval of a department’s curriculum committee. As an experimental course, the faculty member teaching the course can “work the bugs out”. Perhaps, after teaching it once or twice, the faculty member may revise the content, which could affect the course title or course description found in the catalog and in UDSIS. Teaching as an experimental course is not a university requirement, however it is strongly suggested as this can save catalog revisions later and improve the final course.  It is understood that there will be times that new course must be taught before it is offered in an experimental form.  In this case, the explanation for why the course needs to be created as a permanent course without having first been offered in an experimental version should be included in the form.  After having offered a course in its experimental form twice, it is recommended that the course should be proposed and be sent through the official course creation process.

  • Justification of course creation:*

    The BS in Medical Laboratory Science program is an accredited program by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.  In an upcoming change in the curriculum, senior clinical practicums which previously began in January of the senior year will now begin in February of the senior year.

    To facilitate preparation for the clinical practicum  period, we are proposing this winter session course to engage the students in case-based differential diagnostic practices, synthesizing their prior knowledge gained to both independently and in partner/group scenarios evaluate the cases provided. 

    In addition, we will include review workshops to help them prepare for practicums and upcoming comprehensive and certification examinations.  Included in the review sessions will be test strategies to successfully navigate the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification Examination upon graduation. Students will be engaged in clinical practicums in January 2024 so we propose this course in this approval cycle so that it can be included in the curriculum by January 2025 as a formal requirement.

  • Identify the main emphasis of the course along with major topics covered:*

    The main emphasis of this course is to guide the students using discussion of clinical cases from published journals as well as cases created by the MMSC content experts to apply their prior knowledge in the areas of clinical physiological chemistry, body fluid analysis, clinical immunology and medical virology, medical microbiology and parasitology, bacteriology and mycology, hematology and hemostasis, immunohematology, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory practice, leadership and operations. 

    Students will receive guided analysis of cases covering multiple disciplines, then work in small groups to apply those practices.

    They will be engaged in review workshops by the department content experts, and complete online exam simulation exercises in preparation for their rotatations, and the certification exam, while also receiving instruction in Board of Certification testing strategies and expectations.

    1-Demonstrate proper procedures for the collection of safe handling & analysis of biological specimens.

    2-Utilize scientific principles (e.g. physiology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, etc.), laboratory principles and methodologies for the clinical setting.

    3-Perform laboratory testing with accuracy.

     

    4-Evaluate problems that impact on laboratory services and take corrective action.

    5-Operate equipment properly, troubleshoot, and perform preventive and corrective maintenance.

    6-Utilize proper technique in the performance of all laboratory testing.

    7-Interpret clinical significance, clinical procedures, & laboratory test data accurately.

    8-Evaluate laboratory data using statistical analysis.

    9-Apply principles of continuous assessment to all laboratory services.

    10-Utilize principles of quality assurance and quality improvement for all phase of laboratory services (i.e. pre- analytical, analytical, & post-analytical).

    11-Comply with established laboratory safety regulations & regulations governing regulatory compliance related to laboratory practice.

    12-Communicate through oral and written skills effectively & professionally to enable consultative & educational interactions with healthcare personnel, the public, & patients in order to function successfully as a member of the healthcare team.

    This course is designed to utilize case-study based scenarios to help students synthesize all of the knowledge gained in the medical laboratory science curriculum to critically evaluate diagnostic case studies, propose additional testing, determine differential diagnoses, and propose best treatment and preventive options in preparation for clinical practicums. In addition, certification test-taking skills, strategies and practice will be emphasized.

  • The Capstone Experience will require students to engage in explorations in which the outcomes are unknown, and/ or engage in self-assessment, reflection, and analysis that prepares them for future success. These experiences should occur during the senior year or near the end of the program of study and must have a set of learning goals that are well communicated to students.

    In all possible regards, the Capstone Experience should be an expression of the totality of a student's growth, development, and learning as an undergraduate. If the Capstone experience is primarily course based (vs. internship, research, etc.) it is recommended that whenever possible, the course include high impact practices such as service learning and problem based learning. First Year Seminar (FYS) Justification

  • The faculty senate has recognized the FYS as an important experience for students with clearly articulated content aligned with best practices in helping students through the transition from high school to college. Since it serves as the first introduction to the University of Delaware, a committed portion of the FYS course time should be allotted to common content that furthers the aims of General Education at the University of Delaware and/ or provides a foundation for student success. As such, in May 2015, the faculty senate approved the topics listed below for mandatory inclusion in all FYS courses.

    It is important to note that as an introductory course, the FYS will introduce many of these topics to students, but it is understood that subsequent additional learning opportunities will occur through other general education requirements, courses student must take as a requirement of their college and/ or major, and out of the classroom learning experiences.
